Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands and the driest. Its shape comes from the eruptions of 1730 to 1736, which buried a quarter of the island and left the lava fields that are now the Timanfaya national park. The resorts sit along the east and south coasts: Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, with the capital, Arrecife, between the first two.
In the south, the boats run down the coast to Papagayo, the sheltered coves inside the Los Ajaches natural park that are easiest to reach from the water. Catamarans leave for it from Puerto Calero and Puerto del Carmen, a mini cruise from Playa Blanca, and a guided kayak route sets off from the beach at Las Coloradas. Puerto del Carmen is also where the sunset and dolphin cruises start.
In the north, the port of Órzola is the crossing to La Graciosa, the small island across the strait, by ferry or on a catamaran day with lunch on board. The coach days that go there also take in Lagomar, Mirador del Río or the Sunday market in Teguise.
