Full description
A guided buggy safari in Tenerife
A buggy safari in Tenerife is a guided drive through the south of the island in an automatic buggy. You can choose a coastal route, an off-road trail or a longer tour up to El Teide National Park. The buggies are easy to drive and suit both first-timers and experienced drivers. A multilingual guide leads every tour, and free pick-up and drop-off is included from the main resorts in the south.
What the tours cover
There are several routes to pick from. The 2-hour coastal tour drives through the coastal towns of southern Tenerife. The off-road tours run for 2 or 3 hours and follow a 55 km route with 50 minutes of off-road trail across rocky paths and quieter tracks; the 3-hour version adds more time and extra photo stops. The 3.5-hour Teide tour climbs to El Teide National Park at 2,200 m for panoramic views before heading back along the coast.
The sunset tour
The 3.5-hour sunset tour is timed to reach the high ground for sunset over Mount Teide. It runs through southern Tenerife, with drinks and snacks along the way before the drive back along the coast.
What's included and pickup
Every tour includes buggy hire, fuel, a multilingual guide, accident and third-party liability insurance, and safety gear such as a helmet and gloves. That cover is the operator's insurance for the buggy, not personal travel or medical insurance, so bring your own policy. You also get a coat, glasses, and snacks and water, with the exact drinks depending on the tour. Free pick-up and drop-off is included from Fañabe, Torvisca, Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Golf del Sur. For Playa Paraíso, including the Hard Rock Hotel and nearby hotels, contact us for availability.
Who can join and what to know
Buggies are 550 cm³ and take one or two people. Drivers must hold a valid B1 driving licence with at least one year of driving experience, and temporary licences are not accepted. Passengers can be as young as 7, and children must be at least 1.20 m tall. The tour is not recommended during pregnancy. Bring comfortable clothes, closed shoes and a camera, plus sunscreen and a hat for daytime tours.
Booking and cancellation
Availability is limited and the sunset tours fill up first, so book ahead to hold your spot. You can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before the tour, or between 24 and 48 hours before for a 70% refund. There is no refund for cancellations within 24 hours. The guide was friendly and spoke French, which helped a lot. The scenery is magnificent and the view of Teide alone justifies the trip.
A fine run out to the volcano with a very friendly team. My one gripe is that you never leave the tarmac. The scenery, on the other hand, is well worth the detour, and I would advise going.
A good welcome, and the group is well looked after from start to finish. Crossing the Teide park is genuinely worth seeing.
A pretty and enjoyable buggy run up to Teide. The guide stops regularly along the way to take photos and explain things, and the pick-up and drop-off are well organised. We were glad we did it.
The highlight of our trip, and a superb thing to do as a family. Pick-up from the hotel was on time, and after a short safety briefing we were in the buggies, which are automatic and simple to drive. Oliver led us up into the national park at a decent pace, with stops along the way for photos.
One of the best excursions I have done anywhere. Oliver was a superb guide, full of information and clearly bothered about everyone having a good time. Take something warm for after sunset and something to protect your eyes, especially if you are driving or sitting in front.
We laughed a lot with the guides, who also fill you in on the history of Teide and the island and take photos along the way. It never dragged. A really good experience.
The buggies have seen some use and could do with an overhaul, but that aside we had a good time out. Oliver guided us well.
I cannot remember a better sunset than the one we saw on that outing. The staff are excellent and they handed us something to drink at the end. Worth doing.
We did it yesterday and it was superb. The team are fantastic, the off road stretch alone would have justified the outing, and the snacks and sangria were lovely. We will be doing it again.
Hard to think of a better way to get a feel for the island, and huge fun with it. Do put the gear on, though, or you will end up cold. I would tell anyone to give it a go.
The booking was easy to do on the website and then they picked us up at our hotel and we did the excursion. All good and recommended.
Our instructor was very good and the whole thing ran well. I would point people towards the off road version, and they collected us and brought us back afterwards.
You end up seeing corners of the island most people never reach, and you feel the change in climate as you go from one part of Tenerife to the next. Thanks in particular to Daniel, who guided us.
Loads of beautiful spots on the route, and at each stop the guide told us plenty about where we were. The off road driving was great too.
A family of four, and all four of us had a great time on the safari. Daniel guided the route and made it enjoyable from start to finish. We would tell anyone to give it a go.
