Freebird One boat tour in Tenerife: whale and dolphin watching
The Freebird One is a catamaran that sails the south coast of Tenerife to watch whales and dolphins in the wild. It is one of the most popular boat tours in Tenerife, and it departs every day from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje. You pick from three tour lengths, all of them with unlimited drinks and food on board and a multilingual crew who point out the marine life as you sail.
Which tour to choose
There are three options. The 2-hour tour runs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11:00, with unlimited drinks and a swim stop in the sheltered El Duque Bay (this one does not include transport). The 3-hour morning tour leaves daily at 10:00 and pairs dolphin and whale watching with a swim stop. The 4.5-hour afternoon tour leaves daily at 13:00 and sails as far as the cliffs of Los Gigantes and the bay of Masca, with lunch included.
What is included on board
Every tour includes unlimited drinks: water, soft drinks, beer and sangria. Sandwiches are served, with a vegetarian option on request, and the afternoon tour adds lunch. If you want more comfort, you can upgrade to a Balinese day bed only on arrival at the boat for 25€ per bed, subject to availability (it cannot be reserved in advance). The crew is multilingual and shares facts about the whales, dolphins and local marine environment as you go.
Departure and getting there
The catamaran departs from Dock 10 at Puerto Colón. Free hotel pick-up and drop-off is included on the 3-hour and 4.5-hour tours from selected locations in southern Tenerife; you choose your pick-up point during booking. If you prefer, you can go straight to Puerto Colón. Either way, arrive at least 10 minutes before departure.
Booking and cancellation
You can cancel or change your booking free of charge up to 48 hours before the tour. If weather or sea conditions make it unsafe for the tour to go ahead, you are offered an alternative date or a full refund. Note that seasickness is not a valid reason for a refund once the tour has started, so take precautions if you need to.

The crossing was lovely, with a swim and whales along the way, but what won us over was the treatment: they made our little one feel as if he were running the ship. Thanks to Luis, Edu and Andre. I would recommend it without hesitation.

Dolphins, whales and turtles all turned up, and we stopped at a beach for a swim. Soft drinks, beer and sangria came with it, and there was music and singing going on the whole way. The staff made it. Recommended if you are visiting.
I had worried about getting on and off the catamaran, and it turned out to be no trouble at all. No seasickness either, though I did take a tablet first. Pilot whales came close by; no dolphins, but nobody had promised those. Good crew, and a trip I would recommend.
We did the Los Gigantes trip as a family and it could not have gone better. As the only Spanish speakers on board, we had Mirella sit with us and relay in our language what she was explaining in the others. The kids loved it, the food was good and the swim in open water was spectacular.

The four of us went out on the boat and it was the best day of the holiday, no contest. The staff were attentive and clearly knew their whales. Roberto and his crew were brilliant with our two, even letting them take the wheel.

The crew on board were good company and Denny, the captain, is a joker. Along the way we rescued a bird and saw dolphins and a whale. All in all, one to recommend.

My kid took a turn at the wheel and the food was excellent. Pilot whales came by, the cliffs were something else, and the swim was chilly but fine once you were in. Pick a clear, sunny day if you can; the seats are comfortable and the crew looked after us.
