Royal Delfin: a whale and dolphin watching boat tour in Tenerife
The Royal Delfin is a catamaran cruise off the south coast of Tenerife that goes out to look for whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. The boat has been running these trips for more than 37 years and is fitted with 16 panoramic underwater windows, so you can watch marine life from below the surface as well as from the deck. Multilingual guides explain the different cetacean species you may see. There are sailings every day at 10:30 and 14:00 from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje, and the catamaran takes up to 200 passengers, with sun decks and shaded seating.
Choosing your trip
You can pick a trip to suit your day. The 2-hour tour has an onboard bar where you can buy snacks, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. The 3-hour tour includes a complimentary lunch and unlimited drinks, with a swim and lunch stop at Diego Hernández Bay. The 4-hour tour, daily at 14:00, includes lunch and a swim stop at Masca Bay. A longer 4.5-hour morning tour runs on Fridays at 9:30 in summer, with a Spanish-style menu. Coeliac and vegetarian options are available on request, so mention any dietary needs when you book.
Free hotel pickup and getting there
Free pick-up and drop-off is included from main hotels in South Tenerife, covering Los Cristianos, Playa de Las Américas, Costa Adeje and La Caleta. The 4.5-hour tour also has pick-up from Puerto de la Cruz in the north. You choose your pick-up point during the booking process on the website. If you prefer to drive, the departure point is Puerto Colón, Costa Adeje, Pantalán 12. Meet your guide at Gate 12 at least 20 minutes before departure. Paid public parking is available nearby.
What is included on board
Every trip includes the catamaran cruise, whale and dolphin watching, and multilingual guides. The longer tours add a complimentary lunch and drinks. There are sunbathing areas, shaded seats and complimentary Wi-Fi, though coverage may vary at sea. The boat is non-smoking and has facilities for guests with reduced mobility. Booking and cancellation
Confirmation is instant after booking. You can cancel or reschedule free of charge up to 24 hours before departure. If weather or sea conditions make the tour unsafe, you can move to another date or take a full refund. No-shows are not refunded. If you are prone to seasickness, take precautions beforehand, as refunds are not possible once the tour has started.

The people running the boat are what I remember, attentive and easy with everyone. It does run long, though the route is lovely: dolphins, whales and a swim thrown in. Go for it, it pays off.
Me quedo con la gente que lleva el barco, atenta y con buen trato. Se hace algo largo, eso sí, aunque el recorrido es precioso: hubo delfines, ballenas y un baño en el mar. Anímate, merece la pena.
An unforgettable day for a family. Watching dolphins swim free in their own habitat was the high point, and what sets this boat apart is the underwater deck: you go downstairs and see them through panoramic windows, which the children found extraordinary.
A very clean boat, good food and organisation that holds up. The announcements came in several languages, German among them. During the swim stop the crew kept everyone in sight. We saw plenty of dolphins, whales and flying fish, always at a proper distance from the animals.

We took the shorter sailing and it was enough for us. It gets hot on deck, so bring a hat and plenty of cream. The staff do not miss a thing: several people were seasick and they stayed with them throughout. It is a big boat and it feels safe.

A smiling crew who joke around and also give the commentary in French, which is not common. On the menu: dolphins, whales, flying fish and a hammerhead shark into the bargain. My two teenagers loved the swim at the foot of the cliffs. The meal is very light, but at least it exists.

Pleasant staff and a good boat, but the pilot whales were the real prize. There were plenty of them, and we watched them from under the water as well.
We had pilot whales with their calves just metres from the boat, and then followed them from the underwater windows. Of the crew, Tobias is the one I remember: he told us everything and looked after us all morning. We came off delighted.

A lovely crew and good sightings: dolphins, plus what they present as whales. There is a stop with a swim and something to eat, and the food is exactly the weak spot: a slice of potato cake, a fish ball, bread and a banana. Pretty meagre.

Whales showed up, and the crew were professional and helpful throughout. We could get in the water with the children safely, life vests and all, and I liked that the cups on board are reusable.

Good boat, good food and a crew who made us feel welcome. Getting into the open sea for a swim was the part we talk about most, and we came away having seen both whales and dolphins.

The crew took a small boat out to fish a sheet of plastic from the water, which said a lot about them. Above and below the surface the viewing was excellent, and we were lucky enough to get close to a big family pod of pilot whales.

The coastline is the draw, with the other islands out there and the volcanic rock streaked with old lava, and we swam right beside it. Small whales and dolphins came very close, and there is sangria and other drinks aboard. Not one for anyone who suffers at sea.
