Full description

The Peter Pan pirate ship in Tenerife: whale and dolphin watching at sea

The Peter Pan pirate ship is a traditional Portuguese schooner that sails from Los Cristianos for whale and dolphin watching along the south coast of Tenerife. It runs three times a day, and it suits families, friends and couples. The ship has two bathrooms, a shaded lounge with a large central table, and an upper deck for sitting in the sun while you sail the Atlantic.

What the boat tour is like

The standard trip lasts 2 hours. It heads to one of the best spots in the Canary Islands for wild dolphins and pilot whales, which live in these waters all year. On selected dates a longer 3-hour tour is available: it departs at 10:00, includes a swim stop near the Palm-Mar or La Caleta marine reserves, and comes with lunch. Check the booking calendar for the dates the 3-hour version runs.

Food and drinks on board

On the 2-hour tour, food and drinks are not included but can be bought on board. The 3-hour tour includes lunch: rice with vegetables, meatballs, salad, bread and fresh fruit, plus water and soft drinks, with beer and wine served during the meal.

Departure and getting there

The ship leaves from Los Cristianos harbour, a central point in the south of Tenerife. Free pick-up from south Tenerife is available, and you choose your pick-up point during booking. Please arrive at the harbour at least 30 minutes before your departure time so boarding runs smoothly.

Barco Azul is the licence the Canary Islands government issues for whale and dolphin watching. The boats that hold it fly this flag, and only they may go out to where the resident pods live and approach them.

Aug 2026

Only pilot whales came out, but it was still well worth it. The crew, and Isi in particular, were splendid: very kind, and they explained everything we were seeing.

Aug 2026

The whole family got something out of it. Dolphins, pilot whales, a hammerhead shark and even a turtle came past, and the crew are lovely, giving the commentary in three languages: Spanish, English and French. Do it without a second thought.

I went with two teenage girls and found it well run from the off. The crew were funny, professional and looked after anyone feeling queasy, and everything was explained in several languages. Whales and dolphins showed up, and there was still a swim stop.

Jul 2026

Pilot whales, turtles, dolphins and a shark all came into view, and there was still time for a swim. The crew knew their subject and looked after every one of us. A good one to do as a family.

Jul 2026

A pleasant outing that respects the animals: no chasing them down for a photo, you wait for the whales to show up on their own without disturbing them. The crew are also very nice.

Jul 2026

We did see dolphins, but no whales, which were asleep according to the crew. Two orcas came right past the boat, though, and later two turtles, and the pirate theme on board with the matching music made it extra fun. The sea was rough, so you need to be able to handle that.

Feb 2026

A very good time at sea with an attentive crew. Chris speaks several languages and passes on his feeling for the ocean and for protecting it. Turtles, dolphins and pilot whales all showed, plus a swim in beautiful water.

Dec 2025

We came back to Tenerife and came back to this boat. The welcome was as good as it was the first time, years ago, and on this run we spotted a loggerhead turtle, tropical pilot whales and dolphins.

Nov 2025

Pilot whales and dolphins were everywhere on our trip, and the crew were friendly and knew what they were talking about. I have nothing negative to say about it.

Oct 2025

Small but excellent. The captain and crew were courteous, clearly knew the marine life, and even pulled out a photo of a baby giant squid to show us.

Jun 2025

They explained what we were seeing very well, and the mojito helped. The captain was good and the lad from Hanover could not have been warmer; we were lucky too, with a turtle, dolphins and whales. Recommended.

Mar 2025

The boat is a Portuguese schooner well over a century old, and the crew kept feeding us facts about what we were seeing. Pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, and then Atlantic spotted dolphins that came to play at the bow. There was a short swim as well.

We had such a fun day on the Peter Pan Pirate Ship! The kids loved the pirate theme, and the crew was really entertaining. We saw dolphins and whales, which was amazing.

Dec 2024

She has a character the modern charter boats simply cannot match, and she is a good deal older than any of them. Xavier in particular told us about the pilot whales with humour and real interest, and when one came close he was careful not to crowd her. Our children loved it.

Nov 2024

We liked all of it: the boat, the crew and the time spent watching whales. We cannot think of a single complaint, so all that is left is to thank them and tell them to keep it up.

Oct 2024

Three dolphins came right up alongside the boat and that moment alone was worth it; a turtle went past too. The guides are young, funny and clear in what they tell you, and you can see how much they care about their work and about respecting the ocean.
