The ferry to Isla de Lobos

Fifteen minutes out of Corralejo and you are on Isla de Lobos, the small volcanic islet between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote that has been a natural park since 1982.

Boats leave Corralejo at 9:45, 11:00 and 12:30 and come back from Lobos at 14:00, 16:15 and 17:15, so you decide whether this is a morning or the whole day. On the islet there is walking, the volcano, the lighthouse, the lagoons, and La Concha, the beach where most people end up swimming and snorkelling.

The access permit

Isla de Lobos is a protected natural park and going ashore needs an official authorisation. It is free and you apply for it yourself at lobospass.com. It does not come with the ticket, so sort it out before the day you travel.

The boats

Two run the line. The Ferry Isla de Lobos is 24 metres and carries 112. The Celia Cruz is a 20-metre Rodman 59 catamaran with an indoor and an outdoor deck and 16 underwater viewing windows, which turns the crossing itself into part of the trip.

With or without the bus

The crossing on its own is 17 euros for adults and 11 for children. If you would rather not drive to Corralejo, there is a coach: 35 euros from Caleta de Fuste, El Cotillo, Origomare and Lajares, 27 from Corralejo itself, and 46 from the south of the island on Fridays. Each zone runs on set days, so where you are staying decides when you can go.

Worth knowing

Take water and something to eat. There is nothing to buy once you are on the islet.

We stood at the bow on both crossings and that was the best part of it. The company's people keep an eye on you; the trip feels safe and comfortable, so I would recommend it.

The crossing is short and passes easily, though on the way back the swell was rough enough that you could not stand. What I would change is the waiting area for boarding: it needs some shade.

There is not a great deal to see on Lobos, but you can walk all day, out as far as the lighthouse; the path is hard going, though you get Lanzarote in view. Take plenty of water and your swimming things. The bay with the beach is superb, the water completely still, stony at the start and then a dream.

Too much wind on the day we had chosen, so the boat stayed in port and switching to another date gave us no trouble. The crossing rolled about a fair bit, and the sailors gave a hand getting off. The island rewards a walk right round, volcano climb included, and we would go again.

Well organised, left when it said it would, and the ride across was smooth. There was room to move on board rather than a packed deck, so no complaints from us.

The crossing went fine and both departure and return ran on time. Our slot on the island turned out longer than we needed, though: there is no shade anywhere and the sun is fierce, and I left with burns despite using cream. Carry plenty of water.
