Full description

Poema del Mar, the aquarium in Las Palmas

An aquarium built into the harbour at Muelle Sanapú, a few minutes from Las Canteras and the cruise terminal. This is entry on its own, for anyone already on Gran Canaria.

Coming from Tenerife instead? The Gran Canaria Experience from Tenerife is the full day, with the ferry, hotel pick-up and a guided itinerary around it.

Inside

Three worlds, walked in order: Jungle, Reef and Deep Sea. More than 350 species, in 7.5 million litres of water.

The one people come out talking about is the window into the Deep Sea tank: a curved sheet of acrylic 36 metres long and 7 metres high, weighing 140 tonnes, and the largest curved viewing window ever built. Standing in front of it is the point of the visit.

Most people take two to three hours, which is why it works as an afternoon inside a Las Palmas day, without giving up the whole day to it.

Tickets and times

Adult tickets from twelve years, child tickets from three to eleven, and under threes go free. Open daily, 09:30 to 17:30, with timed entry: you pick the slot when you book.

Getting there

The aquarium is in the harbour, walkable from Santa Catalina and the cruise terminal, and on several city bus routes. There is no hotel pick-up with this ticket. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your slot.

We went early on account of the heat, which turned out to be the right call. It really is a big aquarium and well worth the trip as far as we are concerned.

Aug 2026

A big, good-looking aquarium with plenty of variety, and we enjoyed it. What spoiled the visit a little was the noise, with children shouting and running around non-stop. An adults-only day would be welcome.

Jul 2026

One path runs through the entire aquarium, so you finish it having seen everything, and the restaurant sits with tables facing straight into the big tank. Nowhere else I have visited looks this good. A must if you are in Las Palmas, worth travelling for.

Apr 2026

Stunning inside, with plenty to look at and a good range of species, and it works for children as well. If you come in on a cruise it is only a short walk from the port.

A great thing to do while you are in Las Palmas. Having our tickets sorted beforehand meant we walked straight past the queue.

Nov 2025

Modern, spotless and beautifully put together. What stayed with me was the Deep Sea Window, said to be among the largest curved acrylic panes anywhere at roughly 36 metres across and 7 high. Standing there as sharks, rays and whole shoals drift past does not feel real.

Aug 2025

Several trips to the island and we always skipped this because of the bus ride, which I now regret. It runs as a one-way route, with fish I had never come across and interactive displays packed with information. We caught a feeding, and the dining hall looks straight into the tank; I could have sat there all day.

Mar 2025

A lovely aquarium with a wide range of fish and marine life, well kept exhibits and staff who were friendly and helpful. Deep Ocean was the one we liked most, with its big curved window onto the fish going by, and the Jungle section came close. Worth a visit if you are in Gran Canaria.
