Full description
Catamaran cruise in Gran Canaria from Puerto Rico
The Afrikat sails from Puerto Base, in Puerto Rico, on a four-and-a-half-hour trip along the south-west coast. It is a shared cruise rather than a charter, so you book by the seat, and the same route runs twice a day in summer: 10:00 to 14:30 all year round, and 15:00 to 19:30 from June to October.
Where the boat goes
The catamaran heads west along the coast, passing Puerto de Mogán, the fishing village with the canals that everyone calls Little Venice, and carries on below the cliffs and coves of the volcanic coastline. It anchors in the bay of El Perchel, which is sheltered enough for the swim stop to work on days when the open water is choppier.
The stop
At anchor you can swim, or take the snorkelling gear and look at what is down there. If you would rather have the speed, there is a jet ski, parasailing and a donut ride at a reduced rate paid on board, and the captain runs the tender out for anyone who wants a go. Doing none of it is also a valid plan: there are sunbeds, and most people end up using them.
What is included
A light lunch is served on board. The captain decides the menu on the day, so tell us in advance about any dietary requirement and the crew will plan for it. Beer, sangria, soft drinks, juice, coffee and water are included throughout, and everyone gets a reusable cup to take home instead of a stack of plastic ones. There is air conditioning and Wi-Fi for the whole trip.
Live music on board
A saxophonist, Ashleigh, plays on board on Friday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. It is the same trip on those days, with music.
Getting there
Return hotel transport is included from Bahía Feliz, Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Meloneras, Sonnenland, Arguineguín, Patalavaca, Taurito, Playa del Cura and Puerto Rico. It is not available from Mogán, El Salobre or Las Palmas, so from those areas you make your own way to the port. Either way, be at the pontoon 15 minutes before departure.
Who it suits
The crew speaks Spanish and English, and other languages on some days depending on who is aboard. The trip works for all ages and the boat is accessible: it takes wheelchairs. Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and a hat, and a card if you plan to try the water sports.
Booking and cancellation
Confirmation is digital, so your booking can be shown on your phone. You can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before departure; inside 48 hours there is no refund. If the sea is unsafe on the day, you can move to another date or take a full refund.

We came as a family and it worked out beautifully. Javier and the crew treated us with real warmth, so we have already warned them we plan to come back. A lovely day, and thank you for everything.
Fuimos en familia y salió redondo. Javier y la tripulación nos trataron con un cariño que no esperábamos, así que ya les hemos avisado de que pensamos volver. Un día estupendo, gracias por todo.
This trip filled our last holiday day and it was a good call. The crew could not have been friendlier, we added parasailing and a jet ski once we were on board, and the cocktails were lovely. Their own house one is worth ordering.
Brilliant trip, and the saxophone player was the surprise of the day. I had expected a hot meal rather than a wrap, and it annoyed me that people dumped towels on the front seats to save them and then sat somewhere else. Still had a good time.
A luxurious catamaran with a crew that looked after everyone. The welcome was excellent, the entertainment was well judged, and they kept an eye on me while I was in a walking boot. No complaints.
Le catamaran est luxueux et l'équipage vraiment aux petits soins. L'accueil était excellent, les animations bien menées, et on a fait attention à moi alors que j'avais une botte de marche. Rien à redire.
The pickup was on time, in a modern air-conditioned minibus. Boarding at Puerto Rico was quick and we headed straight out to the bay, where we took two jet skis after a briefing from the guide, and swimming and snorkelling were possible. Lunch was chicken wraps, potato salad and nachos, and the obliging crew rounded the day off.
