Full description
Deep-sea fishing from Los Cristianos aboard the Sofia
The Sofia is a Striker 44 SP sport fisherman, a 42-foot aluminium-hulled boat with twin 370 hp engines, and it fishes the deep water off the south of Tenerife. It is worth noting the port before anything else: the Sofia leaves from Los Cristianos, not from Puerto Colón like most of the fleet on this coast.
Shared rod or the whole boat
You can join a shared trip, taking one of the rods alongside other anglers, or book the boat privately for your own group of up to eight. Private charters run from three hours to seven. The shorter ones stay closer in; the longer ones give the skipper room to work the further marks where the bigger fish hold.
Who takes you out
Captain Juan Dámaso runs the boat, in English and Spanish. He is on every trip, which is the difference between a charter and a rota of skippers: the person reading the water is the same person who read it yesterday.
What is on board
Rods, reels, tackle, bait and lures are provided, and the Canary Islands fishing licence is included. Food and drinks are covered for the length of the trip. The boat has a cabin and a toilet, which makes a real difference on a seven-hour day at sea.
What you might catch
It depends on the season. Tuna and dorado run through the warmer months, with blue marlin at the peak of the summer. The technique, usually trolling, is set by the skipper to suit the day. No experience is needed.
