PADI Open Water diving course in Tenerife

The PADI Open Water course in Tenerife takes you from no experience to a recognised diving licence over 2 to 3 days. You train at a diving school in Los Cristianos with a PADI instructor, complete four dives, and finish with a PADI Open Water Diver certificate that lets you dive anywhere in the world. The course is built for beginners, so you only need to be able to swim and feel comfortable in water.

What the course covers

The course has three parts: theory, practical exercises and open-water dives. You learn about your equipment, safety and underwater navigation, and the theory can be done online before you arrive. In the water you complete 4 dives, two to a depth of 12 metres and two to 18 metres, each giving you 20 to 45 minutes of diving time. All diving gear is included in the price. Once you are certified, the same school runs guided dives for certified divers from Los Cristianos.

Diving conditions in Tenerife

The water off the south coast stays comfortable all year, between 18 and 25°C, with visibility from 15 to 30 metres. Those conditions make it a reliable place to learn. Rays, turtles and octopuses are common sightings, though wildlife depends on nature and cannot be guaranteed.

Location and getting there

The diving school is in Los Cristianos, with easy access to the main dive sites in the south. You can make your own way there, or add optional pick-up and drop-off across southern Tenerife. You choose your pick-up point during booking.

Who can take part

The minimum age is 10. Junior divers aged 10 to 14 earn a Junior Open Water certificate for dives to 12 metres, while everyone else qualifies for the full certificate to 18 metres. You must be able to swim and complete a short medical form before diving. Diving is not suitable during pregnancy.

Booking and cancellation

Booking ahead usually gets you a better price. You can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before the course for a full refund. If weather or sea conditions make the dive unsafe, you can reschedule or take a full refund, and you are told at least an hour in advance.
