La Palma Volcano Tour: a full day from Tenerife by ferry

This full-day trip takes you from Tenerife to the neighbouring island of La Palma by ferry, to see the site of the 2021 Cumbre Vieja volcano eruption as it is today. The day starts early and runs about 12 hours, door to door.

How the day runs

You meet at 07:45 at the Fred Olsen office in the port of Los Cristianos. The ferry crossing to Santa Cruz de La Palma takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, arriving around 11:00. You then have free time to explore the historic centre, including the Barco de la Virgen, the Castillo de Santa Catalina and the island's famous balconies.

What you see on the day

From the Mirador de la Concepcion, set on the highest point of the Caldereta volcano, you look out over the crater and the capital below. The route then crosses the island through the changing vegetation of the "tunnel of time" towards the south-west, into the zone affected by the Cumbre Vieja eruption. A stop at Tacande gives the first close view of the volcano, before the route continues to Tazacorte, passing some of the youngest lava flows in Spain.

Lunch is included at a typical local restaurant, after which you head to the port of Tazacorte to see the fajana, the new stretch of coastline the eruption created. The day closes at a viewpoint by the church of the Sagrada Familia in the Tajuya district, looking out at the volcano from around 2km away.

The return ferry sails from Santa Cruz de La Palma at around 17:00, arriving back in Los Cristianos at about 19:30.

What to bring

A valid passport is required to board the ferry; without it you cannot travel. Bring comfortable clothing and shoes, a warm layer, and motion sickness medication if you are prone to it, for the ferry crossing.
