Full description
The old town on foot
Two hours through the historic centre of Santa Cruz de La Palma, leaving from Plaza Van Dale at 10:30, Monday to Saturday. It is a free tour: nothing to pay to join, and at the end you give the guide whatever you think the walk was worth. The guide is qualified in history and each departure is capped at twenty people.
The route
From Plaza Van Dale the walk turns into Calle O'Daly, the main street of the old town, named after one of the Irish figures who settled on the island. The merchant houses along it are Renaissance and Baroque, most of them built around an inner courtyard.
Then Iglesia de El Salvador, which the walk goes inside: the church holds Flemish work from the 16th century. Out again into Plaza de España, in front of the town hall, where what the guide tells you is the story of the council seated here in 1773 and of how early the town had electricity.
Calle Anselmo Pérez de Brito leads to the balconies. The row of carved wooden balconies along the Avenida Marítima is built in the Portuguese manner, and the colonial houses behind them carry mudéjar latticework on the windows.
The last stretch is the Cruz del Tercero, which marks the conquest of the island, then Plaza de la Alameda and the Barco de la Virgen, a ship built in stone that belongs to the Bajada de la Virgen, the festival the island holds every five years. The walk ends at the Castillo de Santa Catalina de Alejandría, the small fort by the water, finished in the 17th century to keep corsairs out of the harbour.
Worth knowing
Departures are Monday to Saturday at 10:30, with extra times on some dates in the island's calendar. A booking for more than six people is only held with payment in advance. Entry to any monument is separate, and so are transfers. Dogs are welcome on the walk.

The visit flew by and we came away wanting more. Susana goes into detail without it ever dragging, and you can tell how good she is at this. Thank you.
Gracias.
I went with my husband and our ten-year-old daughters, and even they were hooked on the stories Susana told about the old town. She was attentive and warm with all of us. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand a little more of what they are visiting.
A short tour but a full one: the guide told us how the island came about in an entertaining way and left us time to look around and take photos at the church and the balconies. At the end we asked her about other places on the island and got very good advice.
Susana led the whole route patiently and explains things really well, keeping an eye on everyone’s questions. We came away delighted; a very good way to get your bearings and understand a little of the island’s capital.
We enjoyed it enormously: the guide was warm and told everything in an engaging, interesting way. On top of that she gave us the option of going into several local museums and told us about them first. We would do it again without a second thought.
A very pleasant walk through the old town of Santa Cruz de La Palma. Susana was friendly and professional, and her explanations were entertaining from start to finish. Thoroughly recommended.
Totalmente recomendable.
We learned a fair amount, with the guide dropping in facts and stories about La Palma the whole way round. A walk worth doing.
An interesting walk, and holding the attention of more than thirty of us takes some doing, but Susana managed it. There was history and tradition in it; what I missed were the anecdotes and the tips that visitors always appreciate.
