Full description

The volcano, then the sunset

Five hours on La Palma: the eight-kilometre loop to the rim of the Tajogaite cone, walked in the afternoon so that it ends at the Llanos del Jable viewpoint as the light goes. Eight people at most, leaving at 15:30 on Wednesdays and Fridays from El Paso.

How the afternoon runs

You meet on Calle Antonio Pino Pérez, watch the six-minute film about the 2021 eruption shot by the Palma photographer Saúl Santos, and ride twenty minutes up to Llanos del Jable in a shared van.

The path sets off past Montaña Quemada, the cone of Tacande, then drops 300 m to the viewpoints over the lava field and climbs the same 300 m to the edge of the cone. That rim is as close to the volcano as anyone is currently allowed to walk. Everything underfoot is ash and rock.

The viewpoint

The walk finishes at the astronomical viewpoint on the ash plain, which faces west over the sea, and the group stops there for sunset with a small tasting of Canarian produce and wine. If the weather makes that spot no good, the guide moves the stop. Then the van runs everyone back to El Paso.

Worth knowing

Take a windproof jacket: at that height the temperature falls quickly once the sun drops and there is usually wind. Bring proper shoes, sun protection, a hat, and one to one and a half litres of water each. The guiding is in Spanish and English, and the group never goes above eight.
