Die Altstadt zu Fuß
Zwei Stunden durch das historische Zentrum von Santa Cruz de La Palma, Start um 10:30 Uhr am Plaza Van Dale, Montag bis Samstag. Es ist eine Free Tour: nichts zu zahlen, um teilzunehmen, und am Ende geben Sie dem Guide, was Sie meinen, dass der Rundgang wert war. Der Guide hat einen Abschluss in Geschichte, und jede Tour ist auf zwanzig Personen begrenzt.
Die Route
Vom Plaza Van Dale führt der Rundgang in die Calle O'Daly, die Hauptstraße der Altstadt, benannt nach einer der irischen Persönlichkeiten, die sich auf der Insel niederließen. Die Handelshäuser entlang der Straße sind im Renaissance- und Barockstil, die meisten um einen Innenhof gebaut.
Dann die Iglesia de El Salvador, in die der Rundgang hineinführt: Die Kirche beherbergt flämische Kunstwerke aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. Wieder hinaus auf die Plaza de España, vor dem Rathaus, wo der Guide von dem hier 1773 tagenden Stadtrat erzählt und davon, wie früh die Stadt Elektrizität hatte.
Die Calle Anselmo Pérez de Brito führt zu den Balkonen. Die Reihe geschnitzter Holzbalkone entlang der Avenida Marítima ist im portugiesischen Stil errichtet, und die Kolonialhäuser dahinter tragen Mudéjar-Gitterwerk an den Fenstern.
Das letzte Stück führt zum Cruz del Tercero, das an die Eroberung der Insel erinnert, dann zur Plaza de la Alameda und zum Barco de la Virgen, einem aus Stein gebauten Schiff, das zur Bajada de la Virgen gehört, dem Fest, das die Insel alle fünf Jahre feiert. Der Rundgang endet am Castillo de Santa Catalina de Alejandría, der kleinen Festung am Wasser, die im 17. Jahrhundert fertiggestellt wurde, um Korsaren vom Hafen fernzuhalten.
Wissenswertes
Die Touren finden Montag bis Samstag um 10:30 Uhr statt, mit zusätzlichen Terminen an bestimmten Tagen im Inselkalender. Eine Buchung für mehr als sechs Personen wird nur gegen Vorauszahlung angenommen. Der Eintritt zu Sehenswürdigkeiten ist gesondert zu zahlen, ebenso Transfers. Hunde sind beim Rundgang willkommen.

The visit flew by and we came away wanting more. Susana goes into detail without it ever dragging, and you can tell how good she is at this. Thank you.

I went with my husband and our ten-year-old daughters, and even they were hooked on the stories Susana told about the old town. She was attentive and warm with all of us. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand a little more of what they are visiting.

A short tour but a full one: the guide told us how the island came about in an entertaining way and left us time to look around and take photos at the church and the balconies. At the end we asked her about other places on the island and got very good advice.

Susana led the whole route patiently and explains things really well, keeping an eye on everyone’s questions. We came away delighted; a very good way to get your bearings and understand a little of the island’s capital.

We enjoyed it enormously: the guide was warm and told everything in an engaging, interesting way. On top of that she gave us the option of going into several local museums and told us about them first. We would do it again without a second thought.

An interesting walk, and holding the attention of more than thirty of us takes some doing, but Susana managed it. There was history and tradition in it; what I missed were the anecdotes and the tips that visitors always appreciate.
