To the rim of the 2021 volcano

Four hours and eight kilometres on foot to the edge of the Tajogaite cone, on the west side of La Palma. The ground opened here on 19 September 2021 and kept erupting for eighty-five days, burying neighbourhoods on one side and leaving the newest land on the island on the other. The walk goes as close to the cone as anyone is currently allowed.

How the day runs

You meet on Calle Antonio Pino Pérez in El Paso, where there is a toilet, and watch a six-minute film about the eruption shot by the Palma photographer Saúl Santos. A shared van then takes the group twenty minutes up to Llanos del Jable, the ash plain where the loop begins.

The track itself is comfortable underfoot: 7.8 km, first 300 m down to the viewpoints over the lava field, then the same 300 m back up. Everything is volcanic, ash and rock, and there is no shade on it. At the end the van is waiting to bring you back to El Paso.

What you are looking at

The cone is the newest thing on the island, and from the rim the shape of what happened is legible: the fissure it opened on, the direction the flows took down to the sea, the roofs and greenhouses the lava reached and the ones it went around. Guides explain it in Spanish and English on most departures, and some departures are guided in German.

Worth knowing

Bring proper shoes, a jacket, something for rain, sun protection and one to one and a half litres of water each. Departures run every day between 9:00 and 15:30, and the times change from one day to the next, so the calendar is the place to look. When the weather turns, the route becomes a straight line down to the Las Manchas neighbourhood instead: same four hours, 6.5 km, and the van still brings you back. Dogs are welcome if you say so when you book.

There is a toilet at the meeting point. Park at the Hiperdino car park (ground floor, outside, during supermarket hours), outside the El Paso school, on Calle José María Brito, or on the dirt car park.

Good to know

A shared transfer takes the group from the office to the start of the trail. Bring walking shoes, a jacket, 1 to 1.5 litres of water per person and something to eat on the way.
