De oude binnenstad te voet
Twee uur door het historische centrum van Santa Cruz de La Palma, vertrek vanaf Plaza Van Dale om 10:30, maandag tot en met zaterdag. Het is een free tour: niets te betalen om mee te doen, en aan het einde geef je de gids wat je denkt dat de wandeling waard was. De gids is afgestudeerd in geschiedenis en elk vertrek is beperkt tot twintig personen.
De route
Vanaf Plaza Van Dale gaat de wandeling de Calle O'Daly in, de hoofdstraat van de oude binnenstad, vernoemd naar een van de Ierse families die zich op het eiland vestigden. De koopmanshuizen langs de straat zijn renaissance en barok, de meeste gebouwd rond een binnenplaats.
Dan de Iglesia de El Salvador, waar de wandeling naar binnen gaat: de kerk bevat Vlaams werk uit de 16e eeuw. Weer naar buiten, naar Plaza de España, voor het stadhuis, waar de gids vertelt over de gemeenteraad die hier in 1773 zetelde en over hoe vroeg de stad elektriciteit had.
Calle Anselmo Pérez de Brito leidt naar de balkons. De rij houtgesneden balkons langs de Avenida Marítima is gebouwd in Portugese stijl, en de koloniale huizen erachter hebben mudéjar-traliewerk voor de ramen.
Het laatste stuk is de Cruz del Tercero, die de verovering van het eiland markeert, dan Plaza de la Alameda en de Barco de la Virgen, een schip van steen dat hoort bij de Bajada de la Virgen, het festival dat het eiland elke vijf jaar houdt. De wandeling eindigt bij het Castillo de Santa Catalina de Alejandría, het kleine fort aan het water, voltooid in de 17e eeuw om kapers uit de haven te weren.
Goed om te weten
Vertrektijden zijn maandag tot en met zaterdag om 10:30, met extra tijden op bepaalde data in de kalender van het eiland. Een boeking voor meer dan zes personen wordt alleen vastgehouden met vooruitbetaling. Toegang tot monumenten is apart, net als vervoer. Honden zijn welkom op de wandeling.

The visit flew by and we came away wanting more. Susana goes into detail without it ever dragging, and you can tell how good she is at this. Thank you.

I went with my husband and our ten-year-old daughters, and even they were hooked on the stories Susana told about the old town. She was attentive and warm with all of us. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand a little more of what they are visiting.

A short tour but a full one: the guide told us how the island came about in an entertaining way and left us time to look around and take photos at the church and the balconies. At the end we asked her about other places on the island and got very good advice.

Susana led the whole route patiently and explains things really well, keeping an eye on everyone’s questions. We came away delighted; a very good way to get your bearings and understand a little of the island’s capital.

We enjoyed it enormously: the guide was warm and told everything in an engaging, interesting way. On top of that she gave us the option of going into several local museums and told us about them first. We would do it again without a second thought.

An interesting walk, and holding the attention of more than thirty of us takes some doing, but Susana managed it. There was history and tradition in it; what I missed were the anecdotes and the tips that visitors always appreciate.
