Three guided walks, all of them in the north and west of the island, all with transport to the trailhead built into the price. La Palma's trails start high and finish low or the other way round, which is why a guided walk here usually includes a vehicle: without one you would have to come back for your car.
The daytime loop is eight kilometres to the crater rim and back, about four hours, with a six-minute film of the eruption before the group sets off and shared transport between El Paso and the start of the trail. The sunset walk is the same ground later in the day, five hours, with a tasting of Canarian produce and wine at the viewpoint at the end. Both are guided in Spanish and English.
Twelve kilometres and seven hours along a water channel cut into the north-east face of the island, through thirteen tunnels in the rock. A 4x4 taxi carries the group up from Los Tilos to the Casa del Monte, fifty-five minutes of mountain track, and the route walks back down through laurel forest to Los Tilos. The longest tunnel is four hundred metres. Helmet, head torch and poncho are included, and the tunnels drip enough that you use all three. The taxi needs four people to run.
Walking shoes with grip, more water than you think, a windproof layer and sun cover. The volcano ground is loose, dark and open, so it heats up and reflects; the tunnel route is wet and cool. Neither walk has anywhere to buy anything once it starts.
The Tajogaite loop suits anyone who walks regularly. Marcos y Cordero is graded hard, with only 200 metres of climb but 1,100 of descent, and it is the one to think twice about with knee trouble. Children come on the volcano walks; the tunnels are a harder ask.
