Full description
Arona, a Canarian music show in Los Cristianos
Arona is a live stage piece about the traditional music of the Canary Islands, played by Compañía Pieles at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife. Twelve performers are on stage every Wednesday, from 20:30 to 21:45.
It was built for the municipality it is named after, and it stays close to home: the material is Canarian work chants, folk melodies, trades and oral memory, staged as music and movement.
What happens on stage
The show runs in three acts, and each one takes a part of Canarian working life.
The home is the quiet one: bread kneaded, clothes mended, the repeated indoor gestures that hold a household together. The land is patience, sowing and waiting under the southern sun. The sea is nets, boats and reading the wind, where going out is an act of trust and coming back is a celebration.
The percussion section is made of the tools themselves. Oars mounted upright and struck with mallets, barrels, carpenters' boards, hand tools, a spinning wheel: the working objects of the islands, played as instruments. Around them there is singing, flute, violin, accordion and drums, staged and lit for a full theatre.
The company
Compañía Pieles was formed in 2015 inside Laboratorio Escénico and has since played hundreds of performances in and beyond the Canary Islands. It represented the islands at Expo Milán in 2015, held a season at the Teatro Timanfaya and three at the Auditorio Jameos del Agua in Lanzarote between 2016 and 2019, and appeared at the Festival Internacional de Música de Canarias in 2022 and 2024. It has six shows and five albums to its name.
Its work has been recognised with the Premios Canarios de la Música, the Premio Atlántico Sonoro, a Premio 40 Principales and a Premio Réplica.
Artistic direction and musical creation are by Jonatán Rodríguez, stage direction and dramaturgy by Oswaldo Bordón. The company travels with twelve performers, four technicians and two production staff.
