Garachico natural pools: swimming in volcanic lava pools on Tenerife’s north coast

The Garachico natural pools are the most famous natural swimming spot in Tenerife. Known locally as El Caleton, these lava pools were formed when the Trevejo volcano erupted in 1706 and sent lava flowing through the town of Garachico and into the sea. When the lava cooled and hardened on contact with the Atlantic, it created a series of rock pools of different sizes and depths, now filled with clear seawater.

The Garachico lava pools sit right on the waterfront in the town of Garachico, on Tenerife’s northwest coast, next to the 16th-century San Miguel Castle. They’re one of the most visited spots on the north coast and a standard stop on any drive around the island. If you’re staying in the south coast resorts, Garachico is about an hour’s drive.

What the Garachico pools are actually like

Garachico lava pools swimming El Caleton Tenerife

El Caleton is not one pool but a series of them, carved into black volcanic rock. Some pools are large and deep enough for proper swimming. Others are shallow and calm, suitable for small children. The water is Atlantic seawater that flows in naturally with the waves and tides.

At low tide, the Garachico natural pools are calm and the water is clear. This is the best time for swimming and snorkeling (you can spot small fish in the pools). At high tide, waves crash over the rocks and into the pools, which is spectacular to watch but not always safe for swimming. If conditions are rough, some pools are closed off with barriers.

The pools have been sensitively developed with paved walkways connecting the rocks, stairs for easier access, and sunbathing areas carved into the lava. There’s a restaurant right on the lava formation, and the town’s seafront promenade runs along the top. It feels natural but accessible.

Garachico pools: opening times, entrance fee, and practical info

Entrance fee: Free. The Garachico natural pools are a public natural site with no entrance charge.

Opening times: El Caleton doesn’t have fixed opening hours because it’s an open-air natural site. You can visit at any time. However, the pools may be closed (barriers put up) when sea conditions are dangerous. Lifeguards are present during summer months.

Best time to visit the Garachico pools: Mornings, before the crowds arrive. On weekends and in summer the pools get busy, especially around midday. If you can visit on a weekday morning, you’ll have a much better experience. Low tide gives calmer, clearer water for swimming.

Water temperature: The Atlantic around Tenerife’s north coast ranges from about 18°C in winter to 23°C in late summer. Cooler than the south coast. Some people find it refreshing, others find it cold. You can swim year-round but winter dips are brisk.

What to bring: Water shoes are strongly recommended. The volcanic rock is rough and slippery when wet. Bring sunscreen, water, and a towel. There are no changing rooms at the natural pools themselves, but there is a municipal swimming pool next door that has facilities.

Parking: There are two paid car parks near El Caleton. Spaces fill up fast on weekends and in summer. Arrive early or consider parking slightly further out in Garachico and walking (the town is small).

Public transport: TITSA bus line 363 serves Garachico. Check current timetables on the TITSA website before your trip.

What else to do in Garachico

Garachico Town Tenerife

Garachico is worth more than a quick dip. The town was partially destroyed by the 1706 eruption (the same one that created the lava pools) but it was rebuilt and today has one of the most attractive historic centres in Tenerife.

San Miguel Castle. A 16th-century fortress right next to the pools, now housing a small museum and exhibition space. Free or very low cost to enter.

The old town centre. Cobbled streets, traditional Canarian architecture, the Santa Ana church, and the main plaza (Plaza de la Libertad) with its giant Indian laurel tree. Good for a wander.

Restaurants. Garachico has several good seafood restaurants, especially along the waterfront. Fresh fish and papas arrugadas with mojo. More affordable and less touristy than the south coast restaurant scene.

Roque de Garachico. The rocky islet visible from the pools. A volcanic formation that serves as a nesting site for seabirds including Bulwer’s Petrel and Little Shearwater. You can’t visit it but it makes a good photo from the waterfront.

Nearby: what to combine with a visit to the Garachico natural pools

North Tenerife Garachico Icod de los Vinos day trip

The Garachico lava pools are on Tenerife’s north coast, which means you can easily combine them with other northern attractions:

Icod de los Vinos (15 minutes east). Home to the Drago Milenario, a dragon tree estimated to be several hundred years old (the “thousand year” claim is disputed). The town also has a butterfly garden and cobbled streets with good views of Teide on clear days.

Masca village (30 minutes south). One of the most photographed villages in Tenerife, perched on a cliff in the Teno mountains. The drive there is winding but spectacular. See our hiking guide for info on the Masca Gorge trail.

Buenavista del Norte and Punta de Teno (15 minutes west). The northwestern tip of Tenerife. Punta de Teno has a lighthouse and views of the Los Gigantes cliffs. Car access is restricted on weekends and holidays (shuttle bus from Buenavista instead).

Los Silos (10 minutes west). A small, quiet town with a natural pool of its own (Charco de los Chochos) and good hiking access into the Teno mountains.

A full north coast day trip from the south could include Garachico pools in the morning, lunch in Garachico town, Icod de los Vinos in the afternoon, and the drive back via the TF-5 motorway. If you prefer not to drive, CanaryVIP’s north Tenerife guided bus tours include Garachico with hotel pickup from the south.

Is it worth visiting the Garachico natural pools?

Yes. The Garachico pools are one of those places that actually lives up to the photos. Swimming in a volcanic rock pool filled with clear Atlantic water, with a 16th-century castle next to you and the open ocean in front, is a genuinely good experience. It’s free, it’s easy to access, and the town around it is one of the nicest on the island.

The main downside is crowds. In summer and on weekends, the pools get packed. Go early on a weekday if you can. And check conditions before you go: if the sea is rough (common in winter on the north coast), the pools may not be swimmable.
