Royal Ocean: a private yacht charter in Tenerife
The Royal Ocean is a 14-metre Princess 440 Flybridge yacht you can hire privately for a day on the water off the south coast of Tenerife. This coast is sheltered from the wind by the mountains, so the sea is usually calm and the sun is out most of the year. It works for a couple, a family or a group of friends, and the yacht takes up to 10 guests. You can read more on the yacht charter in Tenerife page.
What the charter is like
The yacht has an indoor lounge, a flybridge and sunbathing areas, plus snorkel gear and paddleboards on board. Chef-prepared food and unlimited drinks are included, with cava, cocktails and soft drinks. Charters run daily and last between 3 and 8 hours, with departure times you can set to suit your plans.
Itineraries to choose from
There are four routes. The 3 to 4 hour Los Cristianos itinerary combines whale watching with a swim and snorkel stop in a hidden bay near Los Cristianos or Yellow Mountain. The 5 to 6 hour Puertito itinerary adds more time at sea and gourmet starters on the way to Puertito Bay. The 7 to 8 hour Los Gigantes itinerary cruises to the towering Los Gigantes cliffs and anchors at Masca Bay. There is also a sunset cruise for a quieter evening with cava and cocktails.
Whale and dolphin watching
The Royal Ocean holds the official Barco Azul licence, the Canary Islands accreditation for commercial cetacean watching. It sets the rules the crew has to keep: 60 metres minimum distance, no more than 30 minutes alongside, and leave if the animals show any sign of being disturbed. Pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins live off this coast year-round, so sightings are common, but they are wild animals and nothing is promised.
Boarding, transfers and cancellation
Departures are from Marina del Sur in Las Galletas. You choose your pick-up point during booking, and a Mercedes minibus transfer is included for groups of up to 8 people. Please arrive 15 minutes before departure for boarding. Cancellation is free up to 4 days before short tours, or up to 6 days before longer charters, and no-shows are non-refundable. Let the crew know of any dietary requirements at least 48 hours ahead so they can prepare the menu.

Barco Azul is the licence the Canary Islands government issues for whale and dolphin watching. The boats that hold it fly this flag, and only they may go out to where the resident pods live and approach them.

We saw whales, dolphins and even a hammerhead shark. Miguel and Ralph looked after us impeccably, always friendly, and explained a great deal along the way. An incredible day.

The team were attentive, friendly and funny, and you can see how much passion and eye for detail goes into their work. We were lucky and got to see pilot whales and dolphins. Anyone who gets seasick easily should take something beforehand, well looked after or not, though we would still do it again any time.

A pod of dolphins swimming and leaping, and a flying fish that nobody expected. The yacht is beautiful and the crew are professional and attentive to the small things. An experience not to miss.

Good all round, and the staff were nice. My only thought is that a bit longer in the water would have suited us, though that will depend on the group.
