Scuba diving in Tenerife: dive sites, conditions, and what to expect

Tenerife is one of the best year-round scuba diving destinations in Europe. Water temperatures stay between 19°C in winter and 24°C in late summer, visibility is often 20 to 30 metres, and the underwater landscape is shaped by the same volcanic activity that built the island above the surface: lava tubes, walls, swim-throughs, caves, and arches. There are over 30 named dive sites around the island, several wrecks, and resident green turtles in the south.

This guide covers the main dive sites, what level of certification you need, water conditions through the year, and how diving in Tenerife actually works. Pure scuba content. For snorkeling spots, see our snorkeling guide.

Why Tenerife works for diving

Scuba Diving Tenerife

Tenerife’s volcanic origin shapes everything below the surface. Instead of coral reefs, you get black volcanic rock formations: hexagonal basalt columns, lava tubes you can swim through, vertical walls, and caves. The marine life is not the technicolour of a tropical reef but it has its own attractions: green turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, angel sharks (in winter), barracudas, octopus, moray eels, trumpet fish, and seasonal pelagics.

Conditions are stable year-round. Water temperature drops to 19°C in February and March and reaches 24°C from August to October. A 5mm wetsuit is fine in summer, 7mm is more comfortable in winter. Visibility is typically 15 to 30 metres, sometimes more on calm days. The south coast is the main diving area because it’s protected from the trade winds that hit the north and east.

Honest expectations: if you’ve dived in the Red Sea, Caribbean, or Indo-Pacific and you’re hoping for the same colourful reefs, Tenerife will look different. What it offers instead is unique volcanic topography, reliable conditions all year, and the chance to dive next to a wreck or a turtle 12 months a year without flying long-haul.

The main dive sites

El Condesito wreck

El Puertito de Armeñime (south coast, near Costa Adeje). The most famous site for first dives in Tenerife. A calm bay with depths of 6 to 15 metres, no currents, sandy bottom, and a resident population of green turtles that are completely used to divers. Ideal for Discover Scuba Diving experiences and the PADI Open Water course. Suitable for everyone from absolute beginners to certified divers looking for an easy dive. Year-round visibility, easy shore access.

El Condesito wreck (Las Galletas, south coast). A 40-metre cement carrier that ran aground on New Year’s Eve 1972. The wreck now lies between 12 and 20 metres deep, broken into a few pieces, with the cement bags still visible scattered around. Inhabited by trumpet fish, octopus, scorpionfish, moray eels, and large schools of sardines. The hexagonal basalt columns next to the wreck are a highlight (similar to Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland). Open Water certification or higher. One of the best beginner-friendly wreck dives in Europe.

El Peñon wreck (Tabaiba, east coast). A tug boat sunk deliberately in 2006 for recreational diving. Lies between 20 and 32 metres deep. Suitable for Advanced Open Water divers and ideal for the Wreck Diver Specialty thanks to safe penetration points. The east coast location means it’s protected by a breakwater wall, so it’s divable 365 days a year. One of Tenerife’s most famous wreck dives.

Las Eras (east coast). A volcanic wall dive that ranges from 5 to 35 metres. Famous for resident schools of barracuda, plus rays, trumpet fish, and a stone Buddha statue placed underwater years ago. Suitable for Open Water divers and above. Generally good visibility, accessible from the shore or by boat.

Radazul (east coast, near Santa Cruz). The east coast diving hub, 13 km south of Santa Cruz. The main marina has multiple dive centres and easy stair entry. Reef diving from 5 to over 30 metres with swim-throughs, overhangs, and volcanic formations. Suitable for all levels depending on the depth chosen. The wall outside the marina drops past 40 metres for tech divers.

Montaña Amarilla / Yellow Mountain (Costa del Silencio, south coast). Dives between 6 and 25 metres around the base of an extinct volcano cone. Spectacular swim-throughs and arches, and the area is a marine nature reserve. Suitable for Open Water divers, with shallower areas accessible to beginners. Some of the best volcanic scenery on the island.

Palm-Mar caves (south coast). Cave system at 15 to 25 metres depth. Recommended for Advanced Open Water divers and above. Excellent night diving site. Light penetrating into the caves creates dramatic effects.

La Catedral (south coast). A vertical rock formation reaching 35 metres with arches and overhangs that resemble cathedral architecture. For Advanced Open Water divers and above. One of Tenerife’s most photogenic dives.

Atlantis (Los Gigantes, west coast). A site of volcanic rock formations near the Los Gigantes cliffs. Depths from shallow to over 40 metres. Suitable for intermediate and advanced divers. The west coast is more dramatic and less dived than the south.

Alcalá (west coast). Shallow dive (max 15 metres) with sandy bottom and two volcanic reefs. Great for spotting turtles, rays, and octopus. Beginner-friendly. Less crowded than El Puertito.

Dive sites by experience level

Beginner / Discover Scuba / Open Water:
– El Puertito de Armeñime (with turtles)
– El Condesito wreck (the easiest wreck dive in Tenerife)
– Las Eras (shore access, gentle slope)
– Alcalá (turtles)
– Shallow areas of Radazul

Open Water with some experience:
– Montaña Amarilla (Yellow Mountain)
– Most of Radazul
– Las Eras deeper sections
– Tabaiba reef (around the wreck)

Advanced Open Water and above:
– El Peñon wreck (Tabaiba)
– La Catedral
– Palm-Mar caves
– Atlantis (Los Gigantes)
– Deeper sections of all sites
– Tech diving on the walls outside Radazul (40m+)

Marine life you can expect

Scuba diving Tenerife: dive sites, conditions, and what to expect
Year-round residents:

– Green turtles (especially at El Puertito and Alcalá)
– Octopus
– Moray eels
– Trumpet fish
– Parrotfish
– Damselfish
– Wrasse and bream
– Various nudibranchs (the small underwater stars for macro photographers)

Common but seasonal:
– Stingrays and round stingrays
– Eagle rays (often in groups, more common late summer/autumn)
– Bull rays
– Angel sharks (winter, December to March, very photogenic)
– Barracudas (in schools at Las Eras)
– Boxlip mullets

Lucky encounters:
– Bottlenose dolphins (resident in the Teno-Rasca area but mostly seen by boat divers)
– Pilot whales (resident in the south)
– Manta rays (very rare but possible)
– Sunfish (occasional in cooler months)

Note on “feeding rays” practices: some operators take divers to sites where rays are fed to attract them for photos. This is now widely considered harmful to the animals. Look for dive centres that explicitly avoid this practice.

Where the dive centres are

Tenerife diving equipment dive centre

The main concentrations of dive centres in Tenerife are:

South coast (Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio, Costa Adeje). The largest hub. Easy access to El Condesito, El Puertito, Montaña Amarilla, La Catedral, and Palm-Mar. Most courses run from here. Calm conditions year-round.

East coast (Radazul and Tabaiba). Smaller hub but excellent for the Tabaiba wreck and east coast walls. Quieter and more local than the south.

Southwest (Los Gigantes, Playa San Juan). Smaller centres focused on the dramatic west coast (Atlantis, Los Gigantes cliffs). Often combined with whale watching trips.

North (Puerto de la Cruz). The smallest hub. Conditions are more variable here because of the trade winds, but a few dive centres operate when the sea allows.

How much does diving in Tenerife cost?

Single fun dive (with equipment rental): around €45 to €60 depending on the centre and whether boat transfer is included.

Two-tank boat dive: around €80 to €110.

Discover Scuba Diving (introductory dive, no certification needed): around €70 to €95. Includes a quick briefing, basic skills in shallow water, and one supervised dive at El Puertito or a similar site.

PADI Open Water Course (full certification, 3 to 4 days): around €380 to €450. Typically includes all materials, equipment, and 4 to 5 dives.

Advanced Open Water (2 days): around €290 to €350.

Wreck Diver Specialty: around €250 to €300, often around the El Peñon wreck.

These are typical 2026 prices. Cheaper if you bring your own gear.

What to bring (and what to rent)

Open Water: Scuba Diving Tenerife

Bring if you can: mask (well-fitted), dive computer, log book, certification card. These are personal items and renting them is annoying.

Rent locally: wetsuit (5mm in summer, 7mm in winter), BCD, regulator, fins, weights, tank. Almost every dive centre rents full equipment for €15 to €25 per day.

Optional but useful: dive torch (essential for cave dives at Palm-Mar or any night dive), surface marker buoy, hood for winter dives.

Best time of year for diving

Summer (June to September): Warmest water (22-24°C), most divers, best for photography because of the light. Slightly more boat traffic.

Autumn (October to November): Excellent visibility, water still warm (21-23°C), eagle rays often more common, fewer divers than peak summer.

Winter (December to March): Coolest water (19-20°C), fewer divers, angel shark season (the main draw for many photographers). 7mm wetsuit recommended.

Spring (April to May): Water warming up (19-21°C), good visibility, fewer crowds. Excellent value.

The honest answer: Tenerife dives well all 12 months. Pick winter for angel sharks, summer for warm water and pelagics, autumn for eagle rays and the best visibility.

Diving safety in Tenerife

Don’t fly within 24 hours after diving. This applies to single dives and especially to multi-dive days. Plan accordingly if you’re flying out.

Don’t drive up Mount Teide after diving. Same principle as flying. Teide reaches 3,718 metres and the road takes you above 2,000 m. Wait at least 12 hours after a single dive, 24 hours after multi-dives.

Hyperbaric chamber: Tenerife has a hyperbaric chamber at Hospital Universitario de Canarias in La Laguna, available 24/7 for diving emergencies.

Travel insurance: get a policy that covers scuba diving (DAN Europe is the standard for serious divers). Standard travel insurance often excludes diving.

Choose certified centres. Look for PADI 5 Star, SSI, or BSAC affiliation. Avoid operators that pressure you to dive beyond your certification level.

Diving in Tenerife vs other Canary Islands

Tenerife: The most dive sites, the most centres, the most variety. Best for course-takers, wreck divers, and anyone who wants reliable conditions and many options.

Lanzarote: Quieter, often credited with the best visibility in the Canaries. Famous for the Museo Atlántico underwater sculpture museum.

El Hierro: The smallest and most remote. Known for La Restinga marine reserve, considered one of the best dive sites in Europe.

Gran Canaria: Similar to Tenerife in scale, with several wrecks and a famous angel shark population in winter.

If diving is the main reason for your trip, El Hierro is the connoisseur choice. If you want to combine diving with a full holiday including beaches, Teide, excursions, and nightlife, Tenerife is the most practical choice.

Combining diving with other activities

Planning a trip to Tenerife: the complete travel guide

A typical diving holiday in Tenerife lasts 5 to 7 days. Most divers do 1 or 2 dives per day, leaving the afternoon free. Non-diving days are good for visiting Teide (remember the altitude rule, no diving the same day), the north of the island, or the natural parks.

For your last day before flying, plan something dry: a visit to the Drago Milenario in Icod, exploring La Orotava, or just relaxing at the resort. Don’t dive within 24 hours of your flight.

For non-diving travel companions, the south coast hubs (Costa Adeje, Las Galletas) have plenty of excursions available daily, so they won’t be bored while you’re underwater.
