Full description

Whale and dolphin watching on a catamaran in Tenerife

The White Tenerife catamaran sails the south coast of the island to watch whales and dolphins in the wild. You ride White Paradise, a 20-metre catamaran with solar panels, electric engines and a glass floor for underwater views. Trips leave from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje, and you can join a shared sailing or hire the whole boat as a private charter. Food and drinks are included on every shared trip.

What the trip is like

Pilot whales and dolphins live along this coast all year, so sightings are common. A hydrophone lets you listen to the whales underwater. On the shared trips the catamaran anchors in a sheltered cove with clear water, where you can swim and snorkel. The deck has both sunbathing and shaded areas, a toilet, and a Bluetooth music system.

Shared trips and private charters

The 3-hour shared tour covers whale and dolphin watching plus a swim and snorkel stop, with sandwiches, fresh fruit and drinks. The 5-hour shared tour goes further, to the cliffs of Los Gigantes and Masca Bay, and adds a hot meal of rice with chicken and vegetables. Shared trips depart daily at 10:30, with summer sunset sailings on select dates. Private charters run 2, 3, 5, 6 or 8 hours, take up to 74 guests, and let you set the timing and route.

Getting there

All sailings leave from Puerto Colón harbour in Costa Adeje. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. There are no hotel transfers, so you make your own way to the harbour. You choose your sailing date and time during booking.

Who it suits and what to bring

The catamaran works for families, couples and groups, with space for sun and shade on board. Bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen. The crew speaks several languages. For safety reasons the trip is not suitable for anyone with mobility limitations or a recent surgery.

Booking and cancellation

Booking ahead is recommended, since trips fill up. Cancellation is free up to 3 days before a shared trip and up to 30 days before a private charter. Inside that there is no refund. If a trip is cancelled for force majeure or too few participants, you are offered another date or a full refund. Private charters have their own tiered terms.

Barco Azul is the licence the Canary Islands government issues for whale and dolphin watching. The boats that hold it fly this flag, and only they may go out to where the resident pods live and approach them.

An enjoyable trip, though it felt a little long to me. The crew were friendly and kept an eye on everyone, the sea behaved and we were lucky with the animals. The snacks are the one thing I would improve.

Aug 2026

Well organised, Carlos and Miguel in good spirits, and the commentary on scenery and wildlife came mostly in Spanish with some English. No whales, but dolphins, a turtle and plenty of flying fish. You swim close to the boat below the Masca gorge, where the water is glass-clear and the Los Gigantes cliffs look huge; food simple but fine.

Jul 2026

The crew were cheerful and easy to be around, we watched whales and dolphins and then stopped to swim, with masks lent out on board. The small snack was welcome, though there are not enough mats to lie on, so turn up early. I was seasick from halfway on, as the swell was strong.

The balance was right: Javier and Mario talked about the island and its wildlife without ever crowding the day. Whales and dolphins came close, the coastline looked stunning, and drinks and snacks kept coming, with sandwiches later on. Good for families or anyone after something relaxed.

Fewer people aboard than on similar trips, which made a real difference to how the day felt. The cliffs at Los Gigantes were a sight, we both saw and heard pilot whales and dolphins, and wine, soft drinks and food all came with it.

Nov 2025

The two lads on board looked after us from the moment we stepped aboard, and what they knew about the area and its wildlife came out in a funny, easy way. Out to the whales, then a bay for a quick dip with food and drink, then a slow run back down the coast. We would go again.

Carlos made us welcome and had us laughing, and a sandwich and drinks came with it. A turtle, sea birds, dolphins and whales all appeared, and the children got into the water off the stern with fish all around them. I could not recommend it more.

Had a brilliant day out Whale, Dolphin and Turtle watching, went to visit the remains of an old Volcano, and you can still see that lava tubes on the face of the rocks. Swimming ,snorkeling and lovely food, I even had seconds. Recommend it with the very friendly crew and great craic, music dancing and some beer. Brilliant day out.
