Best Time to Visit Tenerife: A Month-by-Month Guide

Best time to visit Tenerife by month

The honest answer to “when should I visit Tenerife?” is: any time you want. The island has a subtropical climate that delivers mild, pleasant weather twelve months a year. There’s no “bad” season. But there are differences between months that can make a real impact on your experience, depending on what you’re looking for.

This guide breaks it down month by month with real temperatures, crowd levels, prices, and the specific events and activities that make each period worth considering. Whether you’re chasing guaranteed sunshine, trying to avoid peak-season prices, or timing your trip around Tenerife’s legendary Carnival, this will help you pick the right dates.

Tenerife’s Climate: The Basics

Tenerife climate year round
Tenerife enjoys mild weather year-round

Before the month-by-month breakdown, a few fundamentals:

South Tenerife (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos) is consistently warmer, sunnier, and drier than the north. If beach weather is your priority, the south delivers it more reliably throughout the year.

North Tenerife (Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna, Anaga) is greener and cooler, with more cloud cover and occasional rain, especially between November and March. The trade-off is stunning landscapes and a much more authentic atmosphere.

Altitude matters. Teide National Park (2,000m+) can be 15-20°C cooler than the coast. Even when it’s beach weather down below, you’ll want warm layers for Teide at any time of year.

Sea temperatures range from about 18-19°C in winter to 23-24°C in September/October. The ocean is swimmable year-round in the south, though winter dips are refreshing rather than warm.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

Tenerife weather patterns monthly

January
Air temperature (south): 17-21°C. Sea: 19°C. Sunshine: 6 hours/day.
One of the busiest winter months, with plenty of northern Europeans escaping the cold. Prices are moderate (lower than December). The weather in the south is reliably mild and sunny, though evenings can feel cool. This is a great month for hiking (comfortable temperatures at altitude) and whale watching (calm seas). Carnival preparations begin in Santa Cruz towards the end of the month.

February
Air temperature (south): 17-21°C. Sea: 19°C. Sunshine: 6-7 hours/day.
The big event: the Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, one of the world’s largest carnivals and second only to Rio de Janeiro. In 2026, the theme is “Ritmos Latinos” (Latin Rhythms), with the main street celebrations running from mid-February. The Coso Apoteosis grand parade takes place on February 17, 2026, drawing over 100,000 spectators. If Carnival interests you, book accommodation early as Santa Cruz fills up fast. Outside of Carnival, February is similar to January: mild, pleasant, and good for outdoor activities.

March
Air temperature (south): 18-22°C. Sea: 19°C. Sunshine: 7 hours/day.
Carnival continues into early March in some areas (Los Cristianos and Puerto de la Cruz run their own celebrations after Santa Cruz finishes). Spring starts to show, with wildflowers appearing on the hillsides. Crowds begin to thin after the Carnival period. March is excellent for guided tours and exploring both north and south without the peak-season pressure.

April
Air temperature (south): 19-23°C. Sea: 19-20°C. Sunshine: 7-8 hours/day.
Easter can fall in March or April and brings a brief spike in visitors and prices. Outside of Easter week, April is the start of the shoulder season: fewer tourists, lower hotel rates, and increasingly warm weather. The almond trees are in bloom in the highlands. A great month overall for a balanced trip combining beaches and exploring.

May
Air temperature (south): 20-24°C. Sea: 20-21°C. Sunshine: 8-9 hours/day.
One of the best months to visit Tenerife. The weather is warm and settled, the sea is comfortable for swimming, and tourist numbers are still below summer peaks. Prices are among the lowest of the year. Hiking conditions are ideal (warm but not too hot). The north coast is at its most beautiful, with lush green vegetation before the summer dries things out. Water sports like kayaking and diving have excellent conditions.

June
Air temperature (south): 22-26°C. Sea: 21-22°C. Sunshine: 9-10 hours/day.
Summer arrives. The south is hot and sunny, the sea is warm enough for long swims, and the trade winds start to pick up on the east coast (great for windsurfers and kitesurfers at El Médano). June is still relatively uncrowded compared to July and August, with good prices on flights and accommodation. San Juan (June 23) is celebrated across the island with bonfires on the beaches.

July
Air temperature (south): 24-28°C. Sea: 22-23°C. Sunshine: 10+ hours/day.
Peak summer. Hot, dry, and sunny in the south. This is the busiest month along with August, as Spanish families are on school holidays and European visitors arrive in large numbers. Prices are at their highest. Siam Park and other attractions are at their most crowded, so booking in advance is essential. The wind at El Médano is at its most consistent for wind sports.

August
Air temperature (south): 25-29°C. Sea: 23-24°C. Sunshine: 10+ hours/day.
The hottest and busiest month. Temperatures in the south can touch 30°C+, especially during calima episodes (hot, dusty air blown in from the Sahara that can push temperatures several degrees higher and reduce visibility). Beaches and resorts are full. If you visit in August, book everything well in advance and be prepared for crowds. On the plus side, the sea is at its warmest and the weather is virtually guaranteed.

September
Air temperature (south): 24-28°C. Sea: 23-24°C. Sunshine: 8-9 hours/day.
A strong contender for best month to visit Tenerife. The summer crowds disperse as European school holidays end, but the weather and sea temperatures remain at their peak. Prices drop significantly. The water is at its warmest (23-24°C), making it the best month for swimming, snorkelling, and water sports. The only downside: the occasional calima can still occur.

October
Air temperature (south): 23-27°C. Sea: 23°C. Sunshine: 7-8 hours/day.
Another excellent month. Warm weather, warm sea, low prices, and thin crowds. October is when rain becomes slightly more likely (mainly in the north), but the south remains dry and sunny most days. This is a particularly good month for combining beach time with excursions inland and to the north, as temperatures are comfortable for both.

November
Air temperature (south): 21-24°C. Sea: 21-22°C. Sunshine: 6-7 hours/day.
The start of the “winter sun” season, with increasing numbers of visitors from the UK and northern Europe arriving to escape the cold. Prices start to creep up towards December levels. November is the wettest month on average, though “wet” in Tenerife means a few rainy days, mainly in the north. The south stays largely dry and sunny. Whale and dolphin watching is excellent in the calm autumn seas.

December
Air temperature (south): 18-22°C. Sea: 20°C. Sunshine: 6 hours/day.
Christmas and New Year drive a spike in visitors and prices, especially in the second half of the month. The weather is mild and pleasant, with occasional cooler days. The south is reliably sunny. Tenerife’s Christmas celebrations include nativity scenes (belenes) across the island and a lively New Year’s Eve in Santa Cruz. This is a popular month for families and couples looking for a warm Christmas escape.

Best Time for Specific Activities

Beach holidays and swimming: June to October (warmest sea and air). September and October offer the best value.

Hiking and nature: March to May and October to November. Comfortable temperatures, green landscapes, fewer crowds on the trails. Avoid July and August at lower altitudes (too hot).

Water sports (jet ski, kayaking, diving): Year-round in the south. Best conditions May to October. Book through CanaryVIP water sports.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing (El Médano): May to September for the most consistent trade winds. Year-round otherwise, with variable conditions.

Whale and dolphin watching: Year-round (resident pilot whales live here permanently), but calmest seas are April to October. Trips run daily from the south coast via CanaryVIP boat excursions.

Carnival: February (and into early March). The 2026 Carnival of Santa Cruz runs from January 16 to February 22, with the main street celebrations from mid-February. Book everything early.

Stargazing at Teide: Year-round, but clearest skies are June to September. Teide stargazing tours operate nightly.

Budget travel: April to June and September to November offer the best combination of low prices, good weather, and fewer crowds. May and October are the sweet spots.

Peak Season, Shoulder Season, and Low Season

Peak season (highest prices, most crowds): mid-December to early January, Easter week, July, and August. Also the Carnival period in February if you’re staying in Santa Cruz.

Shoulder season (good weather, moderate prices): March, April (outside Easter), June, October, and November. This is when experienced Tenerife visitors tend to come.

Low season (lowest prices, thinnest crowds): May, early June, and late September. The weather is still excellent. This is the best time to visit if you want great value without sacrificing anything on the experience.

One advantage of Tenerife over most European holiday destinations: there’s no true “off season” where things shut down. Restaurants, attractions, and excursions operate year-round. Even in the quietest weeks of May, you’ll find everything open and running.

Tenerife vs Other Canary Islands

Canary Islands comparison best time visit

All seven Canary Islands share a similar subtropical climate, but there are differences worth noting:

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are drier and windier than Tenerife, with flatter terrain and more consistent beaches. They’re better for pure beach holidays and wind sports, but offer less variety in terms of landscapes and activities.

Gran Canaria has a similar climate split to Tenerife (dry south, greener north) and a comparable range of activities. Its capital, Las Palmas, is larger and more urban than Santa Cruz.

La Palma is the greenest of the islands and a paradise for hiking. It has some of the world’s best stargazing conditions thanks to its observatories. Less tourist infrastructure than Tenerife.

La Gomera is small, quiet, and covered in ancient laurel forest. Accessible by ferry from Tenerife’s south coast, it makes an excellent day trip or a peaceful multi-day retreat.

Tenerife’s advantage over all of them is variety. No other Canary Island combines beaches, a 3,718m volcano, ancient forests, world-class theme parks, and a full range of excursions and nightlife in one place. That’s what makes it the most popular island in the archipelago and the one that works for the widest range of visitors.
