North vs South Tenerife: Which Side Is Right for Your Holiday?

North vs South Tenerife climate and landscape

Tenerife is one island, but it often feels like two. The north and south have completely different weather, landscapes, vibes, and things to do. Most first-time visitors don’t realise just how dramatic the contrast is until they drive from one side to the other and watch the scenery change in under an hour.

Understanding the difference between north and south Tenerife is probably the single most useful thing you can do when planning your trip. It affects where you stay, what you pack, and what kind of holiday you’ll have. This guide breaks it down honestly so you can choose the right side (or plan to see both).

The Climate: Why North and South Feel So Different

The reason for the split comes down to one thing: Mount Teide. At 3,718 metres, Spain’s highest peak sits in the middle of the island and acts as a giant wall. The prevailing northeast trade winds hit the north coast and are forced upwards by the mountain, creating cloud cover, moisture, and cooler temperatures on that side. The south, sheltered behind Teide, stays dry, warm, and sunny.

In practical terms, this means:

South Tenerife (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, El Médano) gets around 5-6 hours of sunshine per day even in winter, with daytime temperatures of 20-24°C year-round. Rain is rare. The landscape is dry, volcanic, and golden-brown. This is classic beach holiday territory.

North Tenerife (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, La Laguna, Santa Cruz) is noticeably cooler and greener. Expect more cloud, occasional rain (especially between November and March), and temperatures a few degrees lower than the south. The trade-off is a dramatically lush, green landscape with banana plantations, laurel forests, and deep valleys. It feels like a completely different island.

The important thing to understand is that “cooler and cloudier” in north Tenerife still means mild by northern European standards. Winter days in Puerto de la Cruz are typically 17-20°C, which is warmer than a good summer day in the UK. It’s not cold. It’s just not guaranteed sunshine the way the south is.

Things to Do in South Tenerife

Things to do in South Tenerife beaches activities

The south is where the majority of tourists stay, and for good reason. The combination of reliable weather, excellent beaches, and a huge range of activities makes it the obvious choice for most holiday types.

Beaches. The southern coast has Tenerife’s best resort beaches. Playa del Duque and Playa de Fañabé in Costa Adeje have golden sand, calm waters, and good facilities. Playa de las Américas is more lively and popular with a younger crowd. Los Cristianos has a sheltered harbour beach with a traditional feel. Further east, Playa de la Tejita near El Médano is one of the island’s most beautiful natural beaches, backed by the Montaña Roja volcanic cone.

Water sports and boat trips. The calm southern waters are ideal for jet ski tours, kayaking with sea turtles, parasailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and scuba diving. Whale and dolphin watching boat trips depart daily from Los Cristianos and Puerto Colón, with sighting rates above 90%. Private boat charters are also available for groups and special occasions.

Theme parks. Siam Park (regularly voted the world’s best water park) and Loro Parque (technically in Puerto de la Cruz but easily accessible from the south on organised tours) are two of Tenerife’s biggest draws for families.

Land adventures. The Teide Quad Safari and buggy tours take you through the volcanic landscapes above the coast. Horse riding through rural Tenerife is another popular option.

Nightlife and dining. The south has by far the livelier evening scene. Playa de las Américas (particularly the Veronicas strip) has bars and clubs open until the early hours. Costa Adeje leans more towards upscale restaurants and cocktail bars. The Scandal Dinner Show is a popular evening out.

Shopping. Siam Mall in Costa Adeje is Tenerife’s largest shopping centre, with over 80 stores including Zara, H&M, Mango, JD Sports, and a large HiperDino supermarket. It runs a free shuttle bus from the main resorts.

Things to Do in North Tenerife

Anaga Rural Park, San Cristóbal de La Laguna
Anaga Rural Park, San Cristóbal de La Laguna

North Tenerife is a completely different experience. It’s less developed, more authentic, and much greener. If you want to see the “real” Canary Islands rather than a resort holiday, this is where to come.

Anaga Rural Park. This is the highlight of the north, and one of the best things you can do anywhere on the island. The Anaga mountains in the northeast corner contain ancient laurel forests (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) with hiking trails through misty ridges, deep ravines, and dramatic viewpoints. The biodiversity is extraordinary. Trails range from easy walks to full-day hikes. If you only do one nature excursion in Tenerife, make it this one.

La Laguna. Tenerife’s former capital is a UNESCO World Heritage site with gorgeous colonial architecture, pedestrianised streets, independent shops, and a university-town atmosphere. It’s one of the most characterful towns in the Canary Islands. The food and café scene here is excellent, and it feels completely different from the tourist resorts.

La Orotava. A beautiful hillside town with traditional Canarian balconied houses, botanical gardens, and views across the Orotava Valley towards the sea. Well worth a half-day visit.

Garachico. Once Tenerife’s main port until a volcanic eruption in 1706 buried much of it. Today it’s a quiet, atmospheric coastal town with natural volcanic rock pools (Charco del Viento) that are perfect for swimming, and some of the best-preserved colonial architecture on the island.

Icod de los Vinos. Home to the famous Drago Milenario, an ancient dragon tree believed to be over 800 years old. The surrounding botanical garden and the town itself are pleasant for a couple of hours of exploring.

Wine country. The Tacoronte-Acentejo wine region in the north produces excellent wines from volcanic soil. Several bodegas offer tastings. The north is also where you’ll find guachinches, traditional family-run eateries that serve homemade wine and simple, hearty Canarian food at very low prices. Eating at a guachinche is one of Tenerife’s most authentic (and affordable) culinary experiences.

Puerto de la Cruz. The main resort town in the north. It’s much smaller and quieter than the southern resorts, with a more local feel. The town has volcanic black-sand beaches (Playa Jardín, designed by César Manrique), a pleasant old town, and the Lago Martiánez saltwater pool complex. It’s also where Loro Parque is located.

Teide National Park: The Heart of the Island

Teide One attraction belongs to neither north nor south: Teide National Park, which sits in the centre of the island at high altitude. It’s Spain’s most visited national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site, with an otherworldly volcanic landscape that looks more like Mars than the Canary Islands.

You can reach Teide from either the north or south by car or guided bus tour. The cable car takes you to 3,555 metres, just below the summit. For stargazing, the park has some of the clearest skies in the world, and evening tours are one of Tenerife’s most memorable experiences.

Important: temperatures at Teide can be 15-20°C cooler than on the coast, and it can drop below freezing near the summit, even when it’s beach weather below. Bring warm layers regardless of the season.

Where to Stay: North or South?

Here’s a honest comparison to help you decide:

Choose South Tenerife if: you want guaranteed sunshine, beach days, water sports, theme parks, nightlife, and a wide choice of all-inclusive resorts. The south is better for families with young children, first-time visitors, and anyone whose main priority is warm weather and leisure. Most excursions and activities (boat trips, jet ski tours, quad safaris) operate from the south, and hotel pickup is standard.

Choose North Tenerife if: you want lush green landscapes, hiking, authentic Canarian culture, better food (guachinches, local wine), fewer tourists, and a more independent travel experience. The north is better for couples seeking atmosphere over nightlife, walkers and nature lovers, and repeat visitors who’ve already seen the south. You’ll want a rental car if you stay in the north, as public transport is less frequent to the best spots.

Or do both. Tenerife is small enough (around 80 km north to south) that you can base yourself in one area and make day trips to the other. Many visitors stay in the south for convenience and take one or two days to explore the north by car or on a guided tour. This gives you the best of both worlds without needing to change hotels.

Accommodation Styles

South Tenerife has the full range of tourist accommodation: five-star resorts (Royal Hideaway Corales, Bahía del Duque, Ritz-Carlton Abama), large all-inclusive hotels, aparthotels, and holiday rental apartments. Most are within walking distance of beaches and restaurants. Costa Adeje is the most upscale area; Playa de las Américas is more mid-range and livelier; Los Cristianos has a mix of budget-friendly options and a more traditional village feel.

North Tenerife leans towards smaller, more characterful options: rural hotel fincas surrounded by banana plantations, restored colonial townhouses in La Laguna, boutique hotels in Puerto de la Cruz, and country casas rurales in the Anaga or Teno mountains. Prices are generally lower than the south, and the experience is more intimate. If you value character over convenience, the north wins.

Getting Between North and South

The drive between Costa Adeje (south) and Puerto de la Cruz (north) takes about 1 hour via the TF-1 and TF-5 motorways. The roads are well-maintained and clearly signposted.

By bus, TITSA Route 110 connects Costa Adeje with Santa Cruz (about 1 hour 15 minutes express), from where you can connect to Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna, and the Anaga area. For Teide, Route 343 runs from the south, though guided tours are more convenient for this trip.

A rental car gives you the most flexibility, especially for the north. Local companies like CICAR and Autoreisen tend to be cheaper than international chains and don’t push unnecessary insurance add-ons as aggressively.

The Verdict

There’s no wrong answer here. South Tenerife delivers a reliable, sun-filled beach holiday with world-class activities on your doorstep. North Tenerife offers depth, authenticity, and some of the most stunning landscapes in the Atlantic. The best trips include a bit of both.

If you’re visiting for the first time and have a week, a good formula is: base yourself in the south, spend most days enjoying the beaches and excursions, and dedicate two days to exploring the north (one for Anaga and La Laguna, one for La Orotava, Garachico, and the wine country). That way you see the full range of what makes Tenerife special.
