Sea Temperatures, Best Months, and What to Know

Swimming in the sea in Tenerife

One of the best things about Tenerife is that you can swim in the sea year-round. The island’s position in the Atlantic, off the northwest coast of Africa, keeps water temperatures surprisingly mild even in the middle of winter — something that catches many first-time visitors off guard.

But “year-round” doesn’t mean every month feels the same. Sea temperatures in Tenerife vary from around 18–19°C in winter to 23–24°C in late summer, and that difference matters depending on how cold-tolerant you are. This guide breaks down what to expect month by month so you can plan your beach days with confidence.

Sea Temperature by Season

Tenerife sea temperature seasons

Here’s what the water actually feels like across the year:

Winter (December–February): Sea temperatures sit around 18–20°C. This is cool — you’ll feel it when you get in — but it’s perfectly swimmable, especially on calm, sunny days when the air temperature is 20–22°C. Plenty of people swim through winter, though some prefer a short wetsuit or rash vest for longer sessions. The southern beaches (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos) tend to be a degree or two warmer than the north coast.

Spring (March–May): The sea warms slowly, from about 19°C in March to 21°C by late May. March and April can still feel fresh, but by May the water is comfortable for most swimmers without any neoprene. This is also a great time to visit — fewer crowds, warm air, and increasingly pleasant sea conditions.

Summer (June–August): Water temperatures climb to 21–23°C. By August, the sea feels genuinely warm. This is peak swimming season — ideal for long swims, snorkelling, and water sports. Air temperatures regularly hit 28–30°C in the south, making the ocean the perfect place to cool off.

Autumn (September–November): This is actually when the sea is at its warmest. September and October average 23–24°C — the Atlantic has been absorbing heat all summer and releases it into autumn. If you want the warmest water with fewer tourists than August, late September and October are the sweet spot. November remains pleasant at around 21–22°C.

Is the Sea Warm Enough to Swim in Winter?

Winter swimming Tenerife

This is probably the most common question visitors ask, and the honest answer is: yes, but it depends on you.

At 18–19°C, the sea in Tenerife in January or February is significantly warmer than you’d get in the UK, northern France, or Scandinavia at any time of year. For many northern Europeans, it’s perfectly fine — refreshing rather than cold. You won’t be lounging in the water for an hour, but a 15–20 minute swim is comfortable, especially if the sun is out and there’s no wind.

For people used to Mediterranean summer temperatures (25°C+) or tropical waters, it’ll feel brisk. If that’s you, the southern beaches are your best bet — they’re sheltered from wind and typically 1–2°C warmer than the north coast. Wearing a thin wetsuit top extends your comfort time significantly.

The key factor isn’t just water temperature — it’s the combination of air temperature, sun, and wind. A calm, sunny day at 21°C air and 19°C water feels perfectly pleasant. A windy, cloudy day at the same water temperature can feel miserable when you get out. Check the forecast, pick a sheltered beach, and you’ll be fine.

Best Months for Swimming

Best months swimming Tenerife beach

If your main goal is beach swimming in comfortable water:

Best months: July, August, September, October. Water temperatures are 22–24°C, the weather is consistently warm and sunny, and swimming is comfortable for extended periods without a wetsuit. September and October are particularly good — warm water, fewer crowds, and lower prices.

Very good: May, June, November. Water is 20–22°C — warm enough for most people to swim comfortably. These shoulder months offer excellent conditions with less tourist pressure.

Still swimmable: December through April. Water is 18–20°C. Fine for regular swimmers and anyone happy with a quick dip, but not ideal for long beach sessions. The southern coast is the best option during these months.

In terms of time of day, late morning through mid-afternoon tends to be best — the air is warmest, the sun is strongest, and (in the south) the sea is usually calmest. Early mornings can feel cool, especially in winter. Late afternoons are pleasant in summer but can get breezy.

Where to Swim: South vs North

Tenerife beaches south vs north swimming

Where you swim matters almost as much as when.

Stránka southern beaches (Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, El Médano) are the best all-round swimming spots. They’re sheltered from the trade winds, the sea is calmer, water temperatures are slightly warmer, and the beaches are well-maintained with lifeguards, facilities, and easy access. This is where most visitors swim, and for good reason.

Stránka northern and eastern coasts are more dramatic but also more challenging. Beaches like Playa del Socorro or Playa de Benijo are beautiful but can have strong currents, bigger waves, and rougher conditions. The water is also a degree or two cooler. These spots are better suited to confident swimmers and surfers.

Stránka natural rock pools on the north coast (Garachico, Bajamar, Punta del Hidalgo) are an interesting alternative — volcanic pools filled by the sea but sheltered from waves. The water can be colder than the open southern coast, but the setting is stunning and the swimming is safe.

Always check the flag system: green = safe to swim, yellow = caution (swim with care), red = no swimming. Red flags should always be respected — currents around Tenerife can be strong, particularly on exposed northern beaches.

Winter Swimming Safety

Swimming safety Tenerife winter

A few things to keep in mind if you’re swimming in Tenerife during the cooler months:

Conditions change faster in winter. The sea can go from calm to rough within hours, especially on exposed beaches. A beach that was flat in the morning might have significant swell by afternoon. Check conditions before you go and pay attention to flags.

Stick to lifeguarded beaches. During winter, not all beaches have lifeguards on duty — particularly the more remote ones. The main resort beaches in the south are staffed year-round during daylight hours.

Wind chill is the real issue. Getting out of 19°C water into 18°C air with a 20 km/h wind can feel genuinely cold. Bring a towel you can wrap up in quickly, and choose sheltered beaches. The Playa del Duque and Playa de Fañabé areas in Costa Adeje are well protected from wind.

Avoid swimming alone at remote beaches. This applies year-round but especially in winter when there are fewer people around. Northern beaches and hidden coves can be deserted, and if something goes wrong, help may not be nearby.

Water Sports Beyond Swimming

Tenerife’s mild sea temperatures make it one of the few places in Europe where you can do water sports year-round. The calm southern coast in particular is ideal for activities that don’t require big waves or strong wind.

Jet ski tours run daily along the Costa Adeje coastline. Kayaking with sea turtles is one of the most popular excursions — the sheltered bays of the south are home to green sea turtles that regularly surface near kayakers. Potápanie is excellent, with good visibility and interesting volcanic underwater formations, and the water is warm enough to dive comfortably in a 5mm wetsuit year-round.

For surfers and windsurfers, the east coast (particularly El Médano) has consistent wind, while the north coast offers wave surfing at spots like Playa del Socorro. The south is better for stand-up paddleboarding, parasailing, and other calm-water activities.

Seeing Dolphins and Whales

The waters between Tenerife and La Gomera are home to resident populations of short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins. Seeing them in the wild is one of Tenerife’s standout experiences, and sighting rates on boat excursions are very high — upwards of 90% on most trips.

It’s important to know that swimming with dolphins is not permitted in the Canary Islands. The regulations are strict: licensed “Bandera Azul” boats must keep a respectful distance, and no in-water interaction with wild cetaceans is allowed. This is a conservation measure that protects the animals, and it’s one of the reasons Tenerife’s dolphin and whale populations remain healthy.

What you can do is take a boat excursion to observe them from the deck. Trips depart daily from Los Cristianos and Puerto Colón (Costa Adeje), with options ranging from large catamarans to smaller sailboats and private charters. Most trips last 2–4 hours and include drinks, snacks, and often a swimming stop in a calm bay.

Aqualand Costa Adeje is a water park that also has a dolphinarium with daily dolphin shows. It’s a popular family attraction, though opinions on captive dolphin experiences vary — you can read more and decide for yourself. Vstupenky do Aqualandu are available through CanaryVIP, as are tickets for Park Siam a Loro Parque.

Practical Beach Tips

Tenerife beach tips for tourists

Sunscreen is essential, even in winter. Tenerife is at 28°N latitude — the UV index is high year-round. Factor 30+ minimum, reapply after swimming, and don’t underestimate cloudy days.

Bring water shoes. Some beaches have volcanic pebbles or rocky entry points, and black sand gets very hot in direct sun.

Rent a sunbed or bring your own shade. Sunbed rental on the main beaches runs about €3–6 per item per day. If you’d rather not pay, bring a parasol — there’s limited natural shade on most beaches.

Try a guachinche after the beach. These traditional family-run eateries (mainly in the north) serve homemade food and local wine at very low prices. It’s a great way to round off a beach day.

Explore beyond the resort beaches. Tenerife has some stunning hidden spots — Playa de la Tejita, the natural pools of Garachico, Playa de Benijo in Anaga. A prehliadka so sprievodcom or rental car opens up the whole coastline.
